Preamble
Covering your beds using wood chips mulch over cardboard or newspaper
Also known as the brown gold or or wood chips mulch by gardeners, rameal chipped wood or RCW is used in agriculture or horticulture. They come from the fragmentation by the mechanical crushing of branches (bushes or trees).

Rameal chipped wood stimulates biological activity in the soil and is very useful as a mulch. As it decomposes, RCW turns into humus. You can therefore regenerate your soil and make it very rich in microorganisms. Living soil, nothing better for your plants in the garden and for covering yourr beds!

A common practice in permaculture and organic gardening.

Easy way to suppress weeds under a new flower bed!

To supress all weed you can use cardboard or newspaper under RCW!

Mulching with cardboard or newspaper :

Remove the grass with a round shove.
1 foot wide by a foot deep (for edging).

Removed sod and other material can be put in the center of the future flower bed (this will enrich the soil once decomposed).

On top of the pile of grass and other material, lay 2 layers of large cardboard from a furniture store.

Old newspaper works very well too if you use mulitple sheets.

If needed you can spray the cardboard sheets with a garden hose to thoroughly soak the cardboard as you lay each piece. This helps to weigh down the cardboard so it stays in place.
