HOW TO CHOOSE AND PURCHASE A GOOD BROADFORK MADE IN QUEBEC

Choosing a broadfork

December 11, 2022 - By Kéven Prescott, Vegetable Gardener - Horticulturist

Choosing a broadfork

An essential tool for the vegetable garden!
This season, the vegetable garden has increased in size significantly. As the area increases, I need to adapt the tools I work with.

Why use a broadfork?

It allows to respect the structure and the life of the soil. It allows you to decompact, aerate and loosen your soil for planting without turning the soil.

By not killing the soil microorganisms, they can continue to do their job. That is to say, transforming organic matter into assimilable nutrients for plants and therefore your vegetables.

In combination with the mulching technique, the structure of your soil and its fertility will improve.

This will make it easier to harvest carrots and potatoes in looser soil.

With a rototiller, the soil is turned over and over to decompact the soil, which disrupts and causes the death of microorganisms.

The organisms that need more air find themselves under the ground and those that need less air have too much air. Thereby, the galleries, networks, are destroyed.

Fungi, bacteria, mites, nematodes, woodlice, springtails, earthworms... are then affected by this upheaval of the soil.

However, I use the rototiller for a new plot to be cultivated during the first year. It's a question of time and effort (rocks, big roots...).

After having gone around of the broadfork available on the market, I made a choice by taking into account several criteria.

I explain you why I chose Atelier La Libertad as my supplier.

The model I chose is the Extra broadfork!

  • For the design
  • For the materials used (hardened steel forks, ash handle)
  • For its robustness

In addition :

  • The cost is lower
  • The cost of transportation is similar to comparable products
  • Made in Quebec

I compared it with similar models for clay soil. The tools available on the marketplace were quickly eliminated.

  • The materials were of lower quality.

  • The tines were not necessarily tempered.

  • The prices were not really advantageous, especially when you add their expensive transportation costs.
Respect the structure of your soil while making it more friable!
