Gardener's brown gold - Fall leaves

Brown Gold of Gardens

It's in the fall that it's time to collect this precious resource that creates living soil!

Fall is the best time of the year for collecting. Unlike in the spring, the resource is almost free of impurities such as sand, waste, salt..

Moreover, most of the work is done by your neighborhood. But hurry, because big players are on their way and will escape with the precious material!

Yes, you know; the big green trucks eager to keep them all to themselves.

Of course, you guessed it, I am obviously talking about your neighbors' fall leaves!

In urban areas, vegetable matter is present in too small quantities to meet the needs of a vegetable garden.

Take advantage of this to fill your compost bins, mulch your gardens, and make reserves so that you can mulch throughout the next summer.

The resource is so abundant that you can even afford to select the best quality.

It's with brown gold that we enrich our soil and life!

Benefits of mulching :

  • Limit soil compaction caused by rain.

  • The soil will remain more loose / uncompacted.

  • The soil will be enriched (through decomposition/nourishing the soil).

  • Prevents weeds from growing.

  • Improves soil structure.

  • Keeps the soil more moist in the summer (prevents problems with blossom end rot, less frequent watering).

  • Keeps the soil cooler in the summer.

  • Protects roots or bulbs in the spring.

  • Soil warms up less quickly in the spring (prevents plants from budding or sprouting too quickly in case of a late frost).

  • Keeps your vegetables or leaves cleaner (avoids soil splashes).

  • Reduces leaf diseases (fungus, mildew). Many fungi are spread by water droplets that splash fungus spores under plant leaves.

  • Helps micro-organisms and fauna to develop and overwinter (earthworms, predatory insects...).

  • Helps avoid leaching of your soil in winter.

  • Several other benefits...

It's time to get rich in brown gold!
